  44.  Question:  Is there a limit to the total number of files that a
  45. double-sided floppy disk can contain. (I'm NOT refering to the 40
  46. folder limit). I suspect that the 'FAT' must have a ceiling to it.
  47. If someone does know this 'magic' number , might you also suggest a
  48. technique to trap for this disk 'error'.  I'm using GFA 3.07

  74. Easy.  Ask for the Imprimis 94241-502.  It's a Wren VI class half height
  75. mechanism.  Average seek time of 15 ms and should format on the ST to
  76. something like ?425 MB.  Transfer rate is something like 14-22 Mbit/sec.
  77. There is a pared-down version which formats to ?300MB but has a transfer
  78. rate of 18-22 Mbit/sec.  It's an imbedded SCSI mechanism.  These puppies
  79. just absolutely scream.  I have the Wren V half height on my ST and it
  80. cranks 975 K/sec and 18 ms under RATEHD.  The Wren VI's are faster.  Much
  81. faster.  Whew!

  84. remember them exactly offhand.)

  86. By the way, getting a big tax refund is a bad idea.  Ideally, you should pay
  87. Uncle Sam at tax time.  No so much that you have to pay additional interest,
  88. of course.

  140.   I believe RateHD reads from sector 0 to sector 30000, and it assumes a
  141. 16 meg partition. (That probably makes it 32768 sectors).  It kind of steps
  142. from the beginning to the end, several times and then estimates the access
  143. time.  I'd imagine this would be sensitive to the number of heads and the
  144. sizes of the platters.

  160. This article is primarily in reply to Allan Pratt's posting questioning the
  161. reasoning behind my posting of the STE DMA sound information. Since Allan
  162. posted his complaint to the net, I'm going to post my reply similarly.

  164. Allan, I realise that you're not "The Villan Of Atari US", and I would like to
  165. give my reasons for the posting.
  166.  
  167. 1) My STE documentation was obtained from Atari UK. However, I am not a
  168. developer - I just write for a computer magazine. I am also not the only UK
  169. computer journalist with a copy of the documentation. But what did Atari UK
  170. think computer journalists were going to do with the it? Lock it away in a safe?
  171.  
  172. 2) The amount of mail I received requesting that I posted the info to this
  173. group clearly indicates that this information is _NOT_ of limited interest to
  174. anyone. One of the biggest problems with writing software for the ST is the
  175. lack of correct technical information available to non-developers (i.e. the guy
  176. who is fairly serious about programming his ST, and wants the facts, but who
  177. doesn't want everything else you get when you pay to be a registered developer)
  178. I would imagine that my column in ST World would not run to six pages every
  179. issue if such information was available.
  180.  
  181. 3) I agree that simply keying in Atari documentation and posting it is bad (and
  182. also a breach of copyright). Although what was posted is fairly close to the
  183. original Atari text, it is not the same. The wording is mine.

  185. 4) Since the wording is mine, I will carry the can for any mistakes or
  186. omissions.

  190. the STE is wrong. I still intend to post some information on display hardware
  191. soon.

  217. Try STalker.  VT52/ansi emulation, ascii and x/ymodem up/downloads,
  218. great autodialer, a host of nice features, and it works perfectly in
  219. the background with your favorite GEM application.  I haven't used
  220. anything but for ages.  STalker is distributed by:
